Site of Timur's crushing of the Ottomans in 1402 and capital of the Turkish Republic.
Near here in 1402 Timur defeated and captured the Ottoman sultan Bayezid I, nearly ending the young empire. Five centuries later Ankara became the capital of the Turkish Republic, which abolished the Ottoman caliphate in 1924.
