The Niger riverbank where Moroccan guns broke the Songhai empire in 1591.
An army sent across the Sahara by the Moroccan sultan Ahmad al-Mansur, armed with muskets and cannon, defeated the far larger Songhai army of Askia Ishaq II here. Songhai broke apart, and the great age of West African empires ended.
