Amwas (Emmaus)عمواس
The village whose plague in 639 took Abu Ubaydah, Mu'adh and thousands of the Companions' army.
The plague of Amwas struck Syria in 638-639 and killed perhaps 25,000 Muslims. Umar turned back from visiting Syria, following the Prophet's ﷺ teaching not to enter a land of plague. Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah and Mu'adh ibn Jabal died as martyrs.
