The city where local tradition says Namrud threw Ibrahim into the fire.
Muslim, Jewish and Christian traditions here hold that Ibrahim was born in a cave in Urfa and thrown into a fire that Allah made 'coolness and safety' (21:69). The pools of sacred fish mark the spot. As Edessa it became the first Crusader state in 1098, and Zengi's capture of it in 1144 launched the Second Crusade.
