An Ottoman-founded city, heart of one of Europe's oldest native Muslim peoples.

Founded as an Ottoman town in the 1460s, it grew around the Gazi Husrev Beg Mosque of 1531. It became the heart of Bosnian Islam. The murder of an Austrian archduke here in 1914 set off the First World War, which ended the Ottoman empire.
