Town of the Darul Uloom, founded in 1866 to keep Islamic learning alive under British rule.
After the failed revolt of 1857, scholars led by Muhammad Qasim Nanautawi founded the Darul Uloom here in 1866. It became one of the most influential madrasas in the world, with thousands of daughter schools across South Asia and beyond.
