The town beside Kufa that grew around the shrine tradition holds to be Ali's tomb.
Ali was buried secretly after his death in 661 to protect his grave. In Abbasid times a tomb near Kufa became widely accepted as his, and the town of Najaf grew around it. It became a great centre of Shi'i learning.
