Tunisتونس
The city beside ruined Carthage, home of the Zaytuna mosque and birthplace of Ibn Khaldun.
Tunis grew beside the ruins of Carthage after the Muslims took the region around 698. Its Zaytuna mosque became one of the great schools of the Maghrib, and Ibn Khaldun was born here in 1332. It was the Hafsid capital, later an Ottoman province, and a French protectorate from 1881.
