The southern Chinese port Arab sailors called Khanfu, with one of China's oldest mosques.

From the 700s a large community of Muslim traders lived here. Its Huaisheng mosque, with a lighthouse-like minaret, is among the oldest in China, and Chinese Muslim tradition links it and a nearby tomb to the Companion Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas.
