A garrison city that became Ali's capital and a great school of Quran, grammar and fiqh.

Founded by Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas around 638. Ali made it his capital and was struck down in its mosque in 661. Abdullah ibn Mas'ud taught the Quran here, Abu Hanifah grew up and taught here, and the first Abbasid caliph was proclaimed here in 749.
