An ancient city of star-worshippers on Ibrahim's road from Iraq to Canaan.
Tradition says Ibrahim lived in Harran before leaving for Canaan, among a people who worshipped the moon and stars (6:76-78). Its star-worshipping Sabians survived into Abbasid times and gave Baghdad scholars such as the mathematician Thabit ibn Qurra. The last Umayyad caliph, Marwan II, ruled from here.
