The Habsburg capital where Ottoman expansion into Europe was twice turned back.
Suleiman the Magnificent besieged Vienna in 1529 and withdrew before winter. In 1683 Grand Vizier Kara Mustafa tried again, but a relief army under the Polish king Jan Sobieski broke the siege. A long Ottoman retreat from central Europe followed.
