Makkah's sea gate, where most pilgrims have arrived by ship for nearly fourteen centuries.
A fishing settlement on the Red Sea that the caliph Uthman chose as Makkah's port in 647. For centuries pilgrims from Africa, India and the Malay world landed here. A popular tradition placed the tomb of Hawwa, mother of humankind, in its old cemetery.
