Qutayba ibn Muslim took Samarkand in 712, and tradition holds that the Prophet's ﷺ cousin Qutham ibn Abbas is buried at its Shah-i Zinda. Timur made it his capital, and his grandson Ulugh Beg built an observatory that charted over a thousand stars.
