The Silk Road town whose massacre of a Mongol caravan in 1218 brought Genghis Khan west.
Otrar's governor killed a Mongol trade caravan, and the Khwarazm Shah then killed Genghis Khan's envoy. The Mongol storm that followed destroyed the cities of Central Asia and Persia. The philosopher al-Farabi was born in the Otrar district.
