al-Hirahالحيرة

Capital of the Arab Lakhmid kings, an early home of Arabic writing.

The Lakhmids ruled the desert Arabs from here as allies of Persia, and many of its people were Christians. Arab tradition says the Arabic script spread to Makkah from al-Hirah and al-Anbar. Khalid ibn al-Walid took it in 633, and Kufa was later founded nearby.
