Capital of the Sokoto Caliphate founded by the scholar Usman dan Fodio.
From 1804 the scholar Usman dan Fodio led a reform movement that united much of today's northern Nigeria; Sokoto, founded in 1809, became its capital. Its scholars wrote hundreds of works in Arabic, Fulfulde and Hausa, among them those of his daughter Nana Asma'u.
