The mountain capital of Himyar, last great kingdom of pre-Islamic Yemen.
Zafar was the seat of the Himyarite kings, who ruled Yemen from about 110 BCE to the 520s. Its kings turned to Judaism, and the last of them, Dhu Nuwas, persecuted the Christians of Najran before Aksum overthrew him.
