Timbuktuتمبكتو
A desert-edge city of mosques and manuscripts on the bend of the Niger.
After his famous Hajj of 1324, Mansa Musa had the Djinguereber mosque built here. Under Mali and Songhai, Timbuktu's mosques, above all Sankore, were centres of learning, and families still keep thousands of manuscripts. Its great scholar Ahmad Baba was taken to Morocco after 1591.
