Kairouanالقيروان
The first Muslim city of the Maghrib, founded by Uqba ibn Nafi.
Uqba ibn Nafi founded Kairouan in 670 as the base for the advance across North Africa. Its Great Mosque became the model for mosques across the Maghrib, and its scholars, led by Sahnun, spread the Maliki school through Africa and Spain. Under the Aghlabids it was the capital of Ifriqiya, from which Sicily was won.
