Yemen's highland capital, where Abraha built a church to rival the Kaaba.
An ancient city famed for the Ghumdan palace. The Aksumite governor Abraha built a great church here to draw Arab pilgrims away from Makkah, then marched on the Kaaba with an elephant (105:1-5). Its Great Mosque is said to date from the Prophet's ﷺ time; very early Quran pages were found hidden in its roof in 1972.
