Capital of Muslim Sicily, where al-Idrisi drew his world map for a Norman king.
The Aghlabids took Palermo in 831 and it became the capital of Muslim Sicily, with hundreds of mosques. After the Normans conquered the island, King Roger II kept Arabic culture at court, and in 1154 al-Idrisi finished his great world geography for him here.
