The oasis the Arabs called al-Shash, home of an early Quran linked to Uthman.
Al-Shash joined the Muslim world in the 700s. Russia conquered it in 1865 and made it the capital of Turkestan. An early Quran manuscript, traditionally linked to the caliph Uthman and once kept in Samarkand, is now kept here.
