The rock named after Tariq ibn Ziyad, who landed here in 711 and opened Spain.
Tariq ibn Ziyad crossed from Africa in 711 with a Berber and Arab army and landed by this rock. Within a few years most of Spain was Muslim. The Arabic Jabal Tariq, 'Tariq's mountain', became the name Gibraltar.
