Zanzibarزنجبار

An island off East Africa with one of the coast's oldest mosques and a sultan from Oman.

The mosque at Kizimkazi carries an inscription dated 1107. The sultan of Oman, Sayyid Sa'id, moved his capital here in 1840, and Stone Town grew rich on cloves and, darkly, on the slave trade. A British bombardment in 1896 is called the shortest war in history.
