Iram of the Pillarsإرم ذات العماد
'Iram, who had lofty pillars, the likes of whom had never been created in the land' (89:7-8).
Iram was the city or tribe of Ad, the people of Hud, proud of their strength and tall buildings, destroyed by a furious wind for seven nights and eight days (69:6-7). Its place is unknown. Some link it to the lost caravan town of Ubar in the Omani desert, others to Hadramawt.
