The canal town joining the Mediterranean and Red Seas, opened in 1869.
Near the old port of al-Qulzum, the Suez Canal opened in 1869, cutting the voyage from Europe to India. It sped pilgrim steamships to Jeddah, but also drew Britain into occupying Egypt in 1882.
