The desert battlefield where the Muslims broke Sasanian Persia.
On the edge of the Iraqi desert, Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas defeated the Sasanian army over several days, probably in 636; its commander Rustam was killed. Within a year the Persian capital Ctesiphon fell, opening Iraq to Islam.
