The plain by the Euphrates where al-Husayn, the Prophet's ﷺ grandson, was killed in 680.
On 10 Muharram 680 an Umayyad army surrounded al-Husayn ibn Ali, his family and companions here and killed him with most of the men. His sister Zaynab spoke for the survivors. His shrine grew into a city, and for all Muslims the day stands for courage against injustice.
