Hararهرر

A walled Muslim city of eastern Ethiopia, full of mosques and shrines.

Harar grew as a centre of Islamic learning and trade in the Horn of Africa and was the base of the Adal sultanate. From here Imam Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Ghazi conquered much of Ethiopia in the 1530s. Its city wall, the Jugol, dates from the 1500s, and some locals call it the fourth holy city of Islam.
