The mountain valley in Asturias where the Christian reconquest of Spain is said to have begun.
Around 722 a small Christian band under Pelayo defeated a Muslim force in these northern mountains and founded the kingdom of Asturias. Andalusi chroniclers dismissed them as a handful of men; seven centuries later their heirs took Granada.
