One of the oldest Muslim trading towns of East Africa.
A Muslim port by the 900s, it grew rich trading with Arabia, Persia and India. Ibn Battuta stayed in 1331 and described its sultan, scholars and fine cloth. Zheng He's Chinese fleets called here in the 1410s.
