Babylon (Babil)بابل

The great city on the Euphrates that the Quran names in the story of Harut and Marut.

Babil is named in the Quran as the place where two angels, Harut and Marut, taught a trial to the people (2:102). Many commentators set Ibrahim's clash with Namrud in this land. Nebuchadnezzar carried Bani Israil captive here, and Cyrus of Persia took it in 539 BCE.
