Hebron (al-Khalil)الخليل

The hill town named after Ibrahim, Friend of Allah, where tradition places his tomb.

The town takes its Arabic name from Ibrahim, Khalil Allah. Here, tradition says, the angels came to him as guests with news of Ishaq (11:69-73). Ibrahim, Sarah, Ishaq, Yaqub and their wives are held to rest in the cave beneath the Ibrahimi Mosque, whose great walls go back to Herod.
