The rose-red rock city of the Nabataean Arabs, near the traditional tomb of Harun.
Capital of the Nabataeans, carved into cliffs in southern Jordan and rich from the incense road. Rome annexed it in 106 CE. Its rock-cut tombs share the style of al-Hijr, which the Nabataeans also ruled. A shrine on nearby Jabal Harun is held by tradition to be the tomb of Harun.
